Short answer: In Los Angeles County you can almost always get rid of a mattress for free. Your options, roughly in order of convenience:

  1. Have your trash hauler pick it up as a bulky item (free for most residents).
  2. Drop it at a Bye Bye Mattress collection site (free, run under California's statewide mattress recycling program).
  3. Bring it to an LA County mattress collection event (free, up to 10 units).
  4. Have the store take it back when a new mattress is delivered.

Don't leave it on the sidewalk unless you have scheduled a pickup.
