About the data
Facility listings
Facility listings come from California's Solid Waste Information System (SWIS), maintained by CalRecycle. We include facilities whose activity is marked Active and not archived, and whose type the public might use: landfills, transfer/processing stations, construction & demolition and inert debris processing, green waste/composting, and chipping & grinding. Agricultural, biosolids, digestion, contaminated-soil, asbestos and other specialty activities are left out.
When this site was built (2026-10-23), CalRecycle's official SWIS data export (https://www2.calrecycle.ca.gov/SolidWaste/Site/DataExport) could not be used (status: unavailable (redirected to https://calrecycle.ca.gov/wp-content/uploads/sites/39/2023/11/system-maintenance2.jpg)), so we used a public mirror of SWIS site-activity records published by Cal OES (data last updated 2021-09-01). Operator names come from an older SWIS snapshot in the same Cal OES collection (last updated 2018-11-19). Both may be out of date.
We show only fields that are present in the data. We never guess hours or fees. Where they're unknown we say: Call ahead or check the operator's site.
Item guides
Item guides are researched by hand from official government and program websites, with every source linked. If something has changed, the official source wins.
RV listings (OpenStreetMap)
The RV section lists RV dump stations, water fill points, propane, RV parks/campgrounds and RV-friendly parking from OpenStreetMap. The data is © OpenStreetMap contributors and available under the Open Database License (ODbL) (copyright & license). We download it with the Overpass API (query in scripts/rv_overpass.ql). Each place is assigned to a county using U.S. Census Bureau TIGERweb county boundaries. Private or no-access places are left out. Fees, hours and "overnight allowed" are shown only when OSM contributors tagged them. Otherwise we say Call ahead or check the operator's site. Every listing links to its OSM record. If you spot an error, you can fix it on OpenStreetMap.
RV guides are researched from National Park Service and California State Parks pages, with every source linked. Federal campground data from Recreation.gov's RIDB API isn't included yet because that API requires a key.
Junk removal
Some pages will include a booking widget for paid junk removal. We may earn a commission on bookings.
Junk-car partners
Junk-car pages have a space for a partner link to an online car buyer. Once that link is live we may earn a commission. That never changes the DMV steps, state retirement programs or local options we list, which come from official DMV, Bureau of Automotive Repair and local government pages.
RV partners
RV pages have spaces for partner links (RV rentals and overnight-stay memberships). Once those links are live we may earn a commission. That never changes which public dump stations, water or parking we list.
